What is Oral Surgery?

The most common form of oral surgery in dentistry is tooth extraction, including wisdom tooth extraction. Although tooth extraction is not the most pleasant subject to read about, it may be a necessary treatment for you or a family member to maintain good oral health.

It’s best to understand why your tooth or wisdom teeth need to be extracted and what to expect with this procedure. At Memorial Square Dental Clinic in Calgary NE, we perform oral surgery for tooth extractions and wisdom teeth extractions in our clinic, so you have the comfort of familiar surroundings to ease you through the process. We also offer Calgary Sedation Dentistry to help ease any anxiety you may have.

Don’t forget that we’re here to answer all of your questions and concerns and encourage you to book an appointment with one of our experienced dentists who will be happy to explain your treatment in detail.

Why is Tooth Extraction Needed?

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth that erupt, usually around the age of 18. Wisdom tooth removal is necessary for many people, but it is a myth that wisdom teeth always need to be removed.

Wisdom teeth are usually removed for one of the following reasons:

  • They are erupting tilted, sideways or twisted
  • The wisdom teeth are “impacted,” or don’t have enough space to erupt
  • An infection has occurred
  • Tooth decay is occurring because the teeth are hard to reach for proper care

With Sedation Dentistry available, there is no need to fear wisdom tooth extraction. Both anxiety and discomfort are minimized significantly using modern Sedation Dentistry techniques. Read more about Sedation Dentistry at Memorial Square Dental Clinic.

Recovering from wisdom tooth removal is also not as difficult as it might seem. By closely following the instructions given to you before and after your wisdom tooth removal, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you recover.

Teeth Beyond Repair

At Memorial Square Dental Clinic, Calgary NE, our dentists believe in doing everything possible to save your tooth or teeth. However, when treatment options are exhausted due to tooth decay or fracturing of the tooth, the final option may be tooth extraction.

After the tooth extraction site has healed up, we’ll begin the next step in your full recovery which includes replacing the missing tooth. Replacing the tooth is unnecessary if the extracted tooth is the last molar – or wisdom tooth. Read more about the importance of replacing a missing tooth to your oral health.

Baby Tooth Removal

Sometimes when a child is losing their baby teeth, there is not enough space in the mouth for the newly emerging permanent teeth. The permanent tooth, in this scenario, may not come in right up under the baby tooth. A new permanent tooth coming up behind the baby tooth often causes parents some alarm. Although it’s not a dental emergency, it is a good idea to bring the child in to see a dentist.

The baby tooth and possibly even the adjacent baby teeth may need to be removed. Fortunately, the permanent tooth or teeth will often move forward into the right position once space is available.

Tooth Removal for Orthodontic Treatment Plans

It can be very difficult for a patient to understand that teeth may need to be extracted to make room for other teeth to move into their proper positions. The reality is that if there is not enough space for teeth to move into the correct position, no orthodontic treatment can succeed.

Although it may be hard for the patient to envision, their smile will look better with straight, uncrowded teeth and no one will notice the missing teeth at all! With a long-term vision and careful answering of all of your questions, we hope to help you understand your situation and move confidently toward your goals of straight teeth and a healthy, beautiful smile. Follow these guidelines carefully to recover as quickly and as smoothly as possible. Please call us anytime if you have questions or concerns during the healing process. We’re here for you at Memorial Square Dental Clinic, not just during office hours. We have a 24-hour emergency phone number if your concern happens in the evening or over the weekend.

Below are some tips and information about recovering from oral surgery to help you understand what to expect:

Bleeding and Swelling

Bleeding may continue for up to 24 hours after surgery. Biting down with firm pressure on the gauze provided to you after oral surgery for about an hour will help. Remember to remove the gauze gently, moistening it with water if the gauze is sticking to the wound.

Swelling is normal after oral surgery. To minimize swelling, keep your head elevated with pillows and use an ice pack on the outside of your face. Taking these measures in the first 24 hours after oral surgery will provide the most benefit. You can typically expect swelling to be completely gone 7 to 10 days after oral surgery.

Medication and Care After Oral Surgery

Our Calgary dentist at our clinic will prescribe any required pain medication or antibiotics. Please follow the instructions for taking your medication carefully and let us know if you are experiencing pain or have any questions about the medication.

It’s important to get adequate rest after oral surgery to allow your body to concentrate its energy on healing. It’s wise not to plan any activities for at least two days after the treatment.

In the first 24 hours after oral surgery, it’s important not to disturb the extraction site with forceful rinsing. It’s okay to rinse your mouth lightly with water, however, do not swish hard, and instead of spitting, simply allow the waterfall out of your mouth on its own.

After 24 hours, regularly rinsing with a saline or salt water solution will help to keep the extraction site clean and help the healing process. If you have had an extraction, rinse lightly after eating to clean the area.

Smoking is not allowed for at least 48 hours after oral surgery. Smoking after oral surgery has been linked to a painful infection called a dry socket.
